October 1, 2014 -Follow up is imperative in the hiring process.  While the jury may be out on whether a thank you letter can help a candidate through the process, here are five reasons why SLG believes a thank you note post interview is well worth your time:

1. Sending a polished thank you note provides one more opportunity to make an impression, and it keeps your name fresh in the employer’s mind.  While you aren’t expected to send one after attending an on-campus screening interview, it is appropriate and advised to send one after visiting a firm, regardless of the firm’s size. However, care must be taken to ensure no mistakes or errors exist in the correspondence. Be just as conscientious when constructing the thank you note as you are with any other document that you send to a potential employer.

2. Utilize the thank you note as a tool to stand out from your competition once more. It may even strengthen your candidacy for the position you are seeking.  An effective thank you note should also reference something specific about your interview experience that you found to be impactful.

3. Thank you notes are sent as a professional courtesy that shows appreciation for the interviewer’s time, and sending one will say something positive about your character, like how assertive you are.  A professional thank you note signifies that you’ve got it together! Immediately following the interview, a thank you note should be sent to each interviewer, and to the person who arranged the interview, if there were several interviewers.

4. Thank you notes express your continued interest in the position and the organization.

5. Thank you notes add a personal touch to the interview process, and may even plant the seed of a new networking contact that could be valuable in future job searches.

Thank you notes establish goodwill and express appreciation. Some employers hold it against interviewees who fail to send a thank you note promptly. In every scenario of life, there is a protocol for handling the situation with style and grace, and in this case, professionalism. Don’t make the mistake of not sending a thank you note, believing that it will be of little value in the end.  A strong thank you note can serve as an effective tool that reinforces the positive impression you made during your interview.
