October 29, 2014:  Whether you feel it’s just time to move on professionally, or your hard work has led to bigger and more promising opportunities, there is an appropriate way to close one professional chapter to begin another one that offers growth and change. Schneider Legal Group shares some tips on how to exit your current job honorably:

DON’T BURN BRIDGES.  If you have resentments or bad feelings built up, now is not the time to unload them. Move on professionally; always try to be remembered in a positive light. You never know when your paths may cross again.

MAINTAIN YOUR CREDIBILITY. When asked why you are leaving, be honest, but share only information and facts. Refrain from making complaints, or any loose statements that aren’t verifiable. Do not get emotional.

PROVIDE PROPER NOTICE.  Give your employers the courtesy of informing them first before sharing the news with your coworkers. You don’t want your boss finding out through a rumor mill that you’re leaving; this could result in a negative mark against your character.

PROTECT YOURSELF.  Review any agreements you signed before you quit, such as a non-compete or non-solicitation agreement that could restrict or prohibit you from accepting a new position.

DON’T BE STUPID.  Copying or emailing yourself any documents that are property of the firm when approaching the time of your exit is extremely ill advised. Do not set yourself up to be accused of violating the company’s confidentiality agreement, or stealing valuable company information.

DON’T BE A SLACKER.  Once you have given notice, don’t start slacking off and counting the days until you’re done. See it through until the end with just as much mojo as ever. Be proud of yourself when you walk out of there. Assist with the transition, and even offer to be of assistance after your notice is up.

No matter what the circumstances, you want to leave your current employer on a good note. You want to not only get a good recommendation and avoid burning a bridge, but it’s also important to leave with dignity and feel good about yourself.
